Q. What causes bad breath in the morning?
- Elena, Salt Lake City, UT
A.
Elena, bad breath, whether it occurs in the morning or other times of day, is generally due to the same cause, volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). VSCs come from bacteria deep in the fissures of the tongue and around the teeth. This accounts for the "rotten egg" smell often associated with bad breath as well as the progression of periodontal infection. One of the most important tasks in eliminating bad breath is eliminating VSCs so remember to clean your tongue at least once daily with the appropriate tool, like a plastic tongue cleaner. To find out more about VSCs check out this informative video.
